Hear from our team

“No two days are the same as a Senior Commercial Officer in the Procurement and Contract Management Service. From delivering projects, supporting your team, leading on strategic work and engaging with colleagues across the wider Council it keeps the role varied and interesting; and gives you lots of opportunity to develop and grow personally and professionally. It is no exaggeration to say that this is an incredibly positive and supportive team to work in where we aren't just colleagues but friends.”

"From my interview through to settling into my role, I’ve consistently felt welcomed and supported – both within my category and across the wider team. I’ve been given valuable opportunities to develop and grow, which has helped lead to a promotion in under a year. Joining North Yorkshire Council, and Procurement and Contract Management in particular, has been the best career decision I’ve made."

“I began my career as a Social Care Administrator within CYPS, having worked for NYC for over 15 years in a range of roles and directorates, I was keen to pursue a career change.

Although I had limited direct experience in procurement, my transferable skills were recognised by the Procurement Leadership Team. Through the supportive mentoring and high-quality training I received, I was able to upskill quickly and build strong confidence in procurement legislation and internal governance processes.

I greatly enjoy the variety the role offers and the positive impact my work has on delivering wider council priorities. Since joining the team in 2023 as a Category Procurement Officer, I have progressed into a Senior Commercial Officer role, reflecting both opportunities for development and the support of the team around me.”

Living and working in North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire is a thriving county that adapts to a changing world and remains a special place to live and work.

North Yorkshire's natural beauty is captured in its three areas of outstanding natural parks, national nature reserves, stunning coastlines, scenic rural villages, vibrant cities and market towns. North Yorkshire really is a beautiful, thriving and special place to live and work, rich in heritage and culture.

North Yorkshire features significantly in the ten best places to live in the UK in Halifax Quality of Life Survey. The Quality-of-Life index aims to quantify where living standards are highest in the UK by ranking local performance across a range of indicators. Local areas featured in the top ten included Richmond, Selby and Malton.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics bulletin positions North Yorkshire as the safest place in England with extremely low crime rates.

In addition, the county benefits from excellent road and rail links, with easy access via the East Coast mainline, the A1(M) and A19. Leeds, York, Newcastle, Durham and Teesside are all easily commutable, and London and Edinburgh are just two hours away by train.

From its lively cities to pretty villages, rolling countryside and grand coastline, Yorkshire has so much to offer including great employment opportunities for your family members, along with a higher proportion of schools which are good or outstanding compared to national figures.
