Utilities disruption

Utilities are the basic services we rely on every day, such as:

  • electricity
  • water
  • gas, oil, fuel
  • broadband

Interruptions to these services can happen because of:

  • bad weather
  • technical faults
  • other emergencies

If the electricity goes off it can affect your heating, water supply and internet access.

Be ready for utilities disruption

  • know who to call - find out your electricity network operator by calling 105 for free or visiting the Powercut 105 website. This website also has lots of useful advice about how to prepare for power cuts
  • stay alert - watch out for fake callers pretending to be utility company workers
  • top up with fuel and cash:
    • make sure your car has fuel – you can use it to charge devices
    • have some cash on you in case card machines don’t work

Emergency kit

  • make an emergency kit - this should include:
    • a wind-up torch and radio - no batteries needed
    • tinned or dried food and bottled water
    • warm clothes and blankets
  • charge your devices - keep your phone and power banks fully charged if bad weather is forecast

Stay safe during utilities disruption

  • stay warm and safe - use blankets and layers instead of candles as these pose a fire risk
  • save phone battery - lower screen brightness and close unused apps
  • check on neighbours, especially older or vulnerable people
  • listen for updates - use a battery or wind-up radio for news
  • avoid unnecessary travel - traffic lights may not work and there may be congestion
