Let's Talk is the name of our ongoing countywide conversation where we ask for your views on major topics. We also have a number of other consultations and engagements ongoing at any time and you can find out more about those on our consultations page.

Let's Talk Money

Have your say on our budget for 2026 to 2027.

We are responsible for a whole range of essential services, from waste collection and recycling to providing care for adults and children, education and road maintenance. But, like many local councils, North Yorkshire is facing severe financial pressures with both demand and cost for services like caring for adults and children rising rapidly, coupled with the financial challenges of delivering services such as home to school transport and home care in a large rural county.

We have already implemented a wide-ranging savings and efficiency programme with planned savings of over £88 million since the creation of North Yorkshire Council, much of this through the efficiency opportunities from merging eight former councils into a single new council. Despite this our budget remains under intense pressure.

The government is also planning to change the way that funding is allocated to local councils from April 2026. Although details of the money we will be given will not be available until the end of this year, our analysis of the proposed new system indicates that we will be a significant loser from the changes. These reductions in funding will only add to the financial pressures highlighted above.

This is the context in which we are asking what your views are on our spending and what our key priorities should be for the next financial year.

Let's Talk Skills

In spring 2025 we asked for your views to better understand the kinds of learning people want to pursue, what challenges they face and how training and education can be made more accessible to everyone.

We are currently analysing the results and will report on the outcome in the near future.
