Frequently asked questions about changes for Active North Yorkshire customers

This summer, we are introducing a number of changes across Active North Yorkshire to create a simpler, clearer and more consistent experience across all sites. These include simplifying our membership options, moving to a new, single booking system and updating the names of our swim sessions and group exercise classes so they are easier to understand when booking.

Read answers to frequently asked questions and what these changes mean for you, including timelines, new options and how your current membership may be affected.

Why are we changing our membership pricing?

We are updating our memberships to make them simpler, clearer and more consistent across all of our leisure and wellbeing hubs and community hubs.

Currently, we have around 70 different membership options and they vary between sites. We know this can be confusing, so we are bringing everything together into one straightforward structure that is easier to understand and use.

As part of this change, we are also moving all members onto a single booking and management system. This means your experience will be more consistent, wherever you choose to visit.

The new approach will give you:

  • simple and consistent booking windows
  • no contract memberships, with just 30 days’ notice to cancel
  • access to more Leisure and Wellbeing Hubs through your membership
  • more support for your health and wellbeing

What are the changes to the booking system?

We are moving from multiple booking systems to one single system across all Active North Yorkshire centres. This will make booking activities and managing memberships simpler and more consistent.

You will continue to use the same app. However, when a centre moves over to the new system, a password reset will be required the first time the app is accessed.

An email will be sent in advance with everything you need, including clear instructions on what to do.

When are we making the changes?

To make sure everything runs smoothly, we will be introducing these updates in phases across our sites over the coming weeks. This staged approach allows our teams to support members at each location and ensure a seamless transition. You can see when your local site will move to the new system below

Leisure and wellbeing hub Date of move to new system
Selby and Tadcaster 10 August
Bedale, Northallerton, Richmond, Stokesley and Thirsk and Sowerby 24 August
Skipton 7 September
Fairfax, Harrogate, Jennyfields Styan, Knaresborough, Pateley Bridge, Ripon, Starbeck and Stockwell 21 September

Once your site has moved across to the new system, you will also be able to use any other site that has moved across to the new system as well. From 21 September you will be able to use all centres included in your membership, once our phased system roll out is complete.

What are the new membership types?

We are pleased to offer a simple and consistent membership structure designed to suit your needs.

You start by choosing your level of access. Either Premium, which gives you access to all our leisure and wellbeing hubs, or Core, which gives you access to all centres apart from Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon Leisure and Wellbeing Hubs.

Then select the membership type that’s right for you, such as adult, concessionary or swim only.

We are also offering a +Membership which lets you upgrade any membership to give you the ability to book classes further in advance and 24/7 access to the gym at Northallerton and Thirsk Leisure and Wellbeing Hubs.

New lifestyle benefits will also be added to our +Memberships in the near future as well as being offered separately as part of our new Active Anytime membership.

How do I find out which membership I have been matched to?

Our team have worked hard to assess your current membership to match you to the closest offering under our new structure. Further information will be provided approximately six weeks before the relevant site’s changeover date, confirming your new membership and any next steps.

What do I do if I want to move memberships?

Existing memberships will be matched to the new membership structure. Around five weeks before your site's system update, we will email you to confirm your new membership. If you would prefer a different membership option, the email will explain how to contact us and make changes.

Are you making changes to the booking window for classes and sessions?

Yes, booking windows will be updated when each site moves to the new booking system. The new structure is:

  • 10 days in advance with a +Membership
  • 8 days in advance for all members
  • 7 days in advance for pay as you go customers

What changes are we making to direct debits?

We are standardising our approach to direct debits. This will affect:

  • collection dates which will move to 1 and 15 of the month
  • who is collecting the money which will be North Yorkshire Council
  • the amount we are collecting which will change in line with the new membership structure
  • the Service User Number (SUN) will change to a new one for Active North Yorkshire

When will we be told about changes to direct debits?

Information about any changes to direct debits will be sent by email at least 10 days before any payment or collection changes take effect.

Due to the scale of these changes, communication will be issued directly by email to ensure all customers receive the relevant information.

When will the first direct debit payment be taken?

The first payment under the new arrangement will be taken from the September payment run.

What happens if I am on a health programme or funded membership?

If you are currently on a funded health or referral membership, there is no change to your eligibility or support. You will be moved onto one of our new Active Health or Wellbeing memberships and will continue your programme as normal under your existing referral. Once your programme finishes, you will be able to choose from our full range of new memberships to continue your activity with us.

Will the swimming pool timetables be changing?

Yes. We are updating our swimming pool programmes to create a more consistent timetable format across all of our sites.

The new programmes and session types will be introduced in September, in line with the start of the autumn term.

These changes are designed to make it easier for customers to understand and book sessions, while ensuring a consistent experience across our facilities.

We will share further details about the new timetables and session types closer to launch, so you can plan your visits accordingly.

Will my swimming lessons be affected?

No. Your swimming lessons will continue as normal and there will be no disruption to your scheduled sessions.

As part of our booking system update, some sites will be moving to an updated swimming lesson management system. If your site is affected, we will contact you by email before the changeover date with details of any action you may need to take, such as resetting your password or activating your account in the new system.

Please keep an eye on your emails for updates related to your site. If no action is required, you can continue attending your lessons as usual.
