Register to use household waste recycling centres

From Monday 27 April 2026, you will need to register online to use our household waste recycling centres.

We are introducing a new registration scheme for household waste recycling centres (HWRCs). This will help us make sure that our HWRCs are only used by North Yorkshire residents. We have found that around 16% of current HWRC users live outside the county. Restricting usage to residents is expected to generate savings of up to £400,000 per year.

Owners of commercial-like vehicles will also be able to make up to 12 free visits per year to dispose of their own household waste, once registered.

Free online registration will open on Monday 27 April 2026

You cannot register before this date. When registration opens, we will update our website with all the information you need. In the meantime, you can find out more about what will happen on this page.

Questions about registering to recycle

What details will I need to register?

You will need to give us your:

  • name
  • address
  • email address or telephone number if you do not have an email address
  • vehicle registration

After I register, will I be sent anything?

No, we are not sending any physical documents. After you register online, you will get an email confirmation but you do not need to bring this with you when you visit our sites.

Our site staff will check your vehicle registration when you arrive to confirm that you have registered.

How often will I need to register?

Household registrations will last for three years.

Commercial-like vehicle registrations will last for one year.

Will I need to book a time and date to take items to the HWRC?

No, once you have registered your vehicle, you can still visit our sites whenever they are open.

Can I register more than one vehicle?

Yes, you will be able to register two vehicles per household.

If one of your vehicles is a commercial-like vehicle, it will be limited to 12 visits per year.

Will a friend, neighbour or relative be able to register for me?

Yes, you can ask someone else to make your registration for you. You will need to make sure they use your details and give us a valid email address.

We will send confirmation emails to the email address they use to register.

I cannot visit the recycling centre myself - will other people still be able to take items for me?

Yes, you can still have other people take items to our sites on your behalf.

The car they use will need to be registered either to the person taking the waste or to the address the waste will come from.

They will also need to complete a household waste declaration form at the site office.

I already have a permit for Stokesley household waste recycling centre - will I need to register again?

Yes. All users will need to register for this new scheme, regardless of whether you have registered to use the Stokesley household waste recycling centre in the past.

I already have a permit for a commercial-like vehicle - will I need to register again?

Yes. All users of commercial-like vehicles will need to register for this new scheme.

What do you class as a commercial-like vehicle?

This includes any vehicle which appears commercial, such as:

  • vans
  • pick-ups
  • flatbeds
  • four by fours with cargo areas
  • campervans
  • motorhomes
  • trailers over 1.5 metres

Why will commercial-like vehicles be limited to 12 visits per year?

Some people use commercial-like vehicles to dispose of trade waste as if it were household waste. To prevent this, we are limiting these vehicles to 12 visits per year, which is considerably more than the average number of visits for these types of vehicles.

Will I be able to pay to use my commercial-like vehicle for more than 12 visits per year?

If you exceed 12 visits per year, you will be charged for disposing of your waste as commercial waste. You can find out about the charges on our commercial waste page.
