Do I need planning permission in the Ryedale area?

It is our job to decide whether a planning proposal should go ahead in Ryedale. That can mean anything from an extension on your house to a new shopping centre.

If you want to do any building work, it is your responsibility to apply for planning permission. You also need to make sure we have given you permission before you start any work. 

Not everything needs planning permission.

You would not usually need planning permission if you are just making changes to the inside of a building. It is also unlikely you will need permission for small alterations to the outside, such as the installation of telephone connections and alarm boxes. Other small changes, (putting up walls and fences, below a certain height) may not require planning permission either.

It is likely that you will need planning permission if:

• you want to make additions or extensions to your property
• you want to divide off part of your home for business or commercial use
• you want to build something which goes against the original planning permission for your house – for example, putting up fences in front gardens on an open plan estate
• the work you want to do might obstruct the view of road users
• the work would involve new or wider access to a trunk or classified road
