Dementia is not a disease itself but rather a collection of symptoms, that vary according to the part of the brain that is damaged.

Dementia describes a set of symptoms that include:

  • loss of concentration and memory problems
  • mood and behaviour changes
  • problems with communicating and reasoning

Visit your GP if you experience any type of memory loss symptoms.

Preventing dementia

The risk of developing dementia increases with age. There are also other lifestyle-related risk factors including:

  • smoking
  • lack of physical activity
  • poor diet
  • too much alcohol
  • being overweight
