Shaping the future of our harbours – please share your views

We’re developing a new strategy to ensure our harbours remain safe, sustainable and economically resilient. It will celebrate their rich maritime heritage while supporting innovation, investment and growth — including new developments such as the £10 million Whitby Maritime Hub, opening in April, which will help diversify the economy and create opportunities in the maritime and marine industries for local people.

We encourage everyone to take part in our consultation. Your views will help shape our ten‑year plan to revitalise Scarborough and Whitby harbours and Filey Coble Landing.

The public consultation runs until 22 March 2026, and the strategy will be reported to the council’s executive in April.

Scarborough TEC College apprentice - Lewis

Scarborough TEC College, part of TEC Partnership are delighted to share a positive apprenticeship success story. The Business Engagement Team recently caught up with Scarborough Sixth Form College, which is employing a Level 3 Content Creator Apprentice. Both the college and their apprentice, Lewis, have spoken highly of the experience and the positive impact it’s having on the college.

Lewis shared his experience of the role:

"I am really enjoying my new apprenticeship. I feel as though I've settled into my working environment well. The opportunity to gain experience within the industry is so helpful as I get to see in real time what goes into planning things like marketing campaigns, and experience first-hand the management of the social media channels. My colleagues are really great, and my line manager helps me keep on track with all my tasks and jobs. I also receive support from my apprenticeship mentor who is very helpful and easy to reach when I have questions."

Scarborough Sixth Form College has also praised the impact Lewis has made since joining the team.

Maria Khan, Admissions and Marketing Manager, said:

“Having Lewis as a Content Creator Apprentice is fantastic. In his first few months with us, he has made a significant impact to our social media presence and has brought lots of fresh ideas for promoting the college. Scarborough TEC have been very supportive and provide good structure for Lewis to help him gain his qualification whilst working.”

This apprenticeship represents a significant milestone, as it is Scarborough TEC’s first Level 3 Content Creator Apprenticeship in the Scarborough region. It marks an important step in expanding creative and digital apprenticeship opportunities locally, with hopes for many more to follow.

This success story highlights the positive impact apprenticeships can have on individuals, employers, and the wider region, helping to develop skills, confidence, and career pathways across North Yorkshire.
