Selby College Apprentices: Driving skills, innovation and community impact

Selby continues to shine as a centre of excellence for skills development, thanks to the outstanding work of the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, including Selby College. The Group reports a standout year of progress, describing 2025 as “a fantastic period of growth, collaboration and achievement” a result of strong employer partnerships and a shared commitment to nurturing local talent.

Across the district, apprentices and students have benefited from a diverse range of industry-relevant, hands-on experiences, including factory tours, question and answer sessions with industry leaders and engagement with their local MP. These opportunities not only strengthen learners’ readiness for employment but also help build a robust workforce pipeline that directly supports Selby’s business community.

A highlight of the year includes engineering students visiting National Grid’s new Wren Hall Converter Station visitor hub, where they gained valuable insight into how their technical learning applies to national-scale energy infrastructure.

According to Amanda Gleadall, Head of Engineering at Selby College, such experiences are invaluable in bringing classroom learning to life and inspiring the region’s future engineers.

“Creativity is flourishing too. Level 1 and Level 2 Art students have transformed Selby Station with a series of striking murals celebrating the past, present and future of the town’s railway heritage. This project not only showcases exceptional young talent but also demonstrates how vocational pathways can enrich both the local economy and the cultural identity of Selby.”

Local employers and partners are playing an increasingly active role as well, supporting students through mock interviews, careers events and preparation workshops. Notably, North Yorkshire Police contributed to Safety Week at the college, helping young people develop vital life skills as they prepare for the world beyond education.

In April, supported again by the local MP there will be a reverse jobs fair held at Selby College where students will host their own stands and encourage employers to speak with them and see how they can support their aspirations in their chosen careers.

Together, these initiatives highlight Selby as a vibrant hub where education, employers and public services collaborate seamlessly, strengthening local businesses, supporting workforce development and opening up life-changing opportunities for the district’s young people.
