Thornton’s Bakehouse & Butchers marked an exciting new chapter with the opening of its new, larger shop on Chapel Street in Easingwold; a move that reflected growing demand for the business’s well-known pork pies, traditional baking and locally sourced meats.
Owned by John Thornton, a third-generation family butcher and baker, the expansion was described as an important step forward for the business. Supported by North Yorkshire Council and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the new premises have given Thornton’s the space to bring together a wider range of bakery and butchery products under one roof, alongside an expanded selection of dry goods, while staying true to the values upon which it was built. The business said “The funding we received from the Shared Prosperity Fund was a fantastic contribution towards the multiple new refrigeration units we required for our new shop. We feel incredibly honoured to have been supported by our local council in this way.”
The Thornton family has been a part of the Easingwold community since 1960, when John’s grandparents opened their original butcher’s shop in the marketplace. Since then, the business has built an impressive reputation, earning national recognition including Two Stars at the 2024 Great Taste Awards for its Traditional Pork Pie, multiple awards at the British Pie Awards and honours from the Great British Butchers Awards.
All products continued to be handmade and baked daily in Easingwold, serving both local customers and trade clients across the region.
