Martyn’s Law and SCaN Training for Local Businesses

The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, known as Martyn’s Law, gained Royal Assent on Thursday 3 April 2025 after years of campaigning by Figen Murray OBE, the mother of Martyn Hett, one of the victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena attack. Martyn’s Law requires public premises with a capacity of over 200 to have better preparedness for terrorist attacks and the ability to respond effectively.

To support local businesses in implementing Martyn’s Law, our Ryedale Community Safety Team is offering two free ‘See, Check and Notify (SCaN) Customer Facing’ training sessions this summer.

  • Wednesday 16 July 2025 at 10am until 1pm, Ryedale House, Malton
  • Tuesday 26 August 2025 at 9.30am until 12.30pm, Pickering Memorial Hall

What is SCaN Training?

SCaN training helps businesses maximise safety and security with existing resources. It empowers staff to identify suspicious activity and take the appropriate action, helping to prevent potential threats while enhancing the customer experience.

This training is free and open to all local businesses and organisations, particularly those impacted by Martyn’s Law.

To register or for more information, visit ACT Training Suite by North Yorkshire Police on Eventbrite.
