Short breaks and respite for children and young people with SEND

Short breaks are available to families to provide a break from caring for a disabled child and for the child to have a break from their carers.

Short breaks are matched to meet the child's needs, interests and preferences and aim to provide:

  • extra social opportunities for the child
  • a break for the parents and child
  • time for parents to spend with other children in the family

There are three different types of short breaks available:

  • universal support
  • additional support
  • specialist support

See our short breaks statement to find out who can access a short break, what is available at different levels of need and how this can be accessed.

Short Breaks Grant update

Thank you to all the families who contributed to the recent engagement survey. Your feedback has been invaluable in helping us shape the future of support for children and families in North Yorkshire. Together, we want to ensure that services meet both current and longer-term needs.

We are proud to have offered the Short Breaks Grant for a number of years, providing valuable support to many families. However, increasing demand has meant the grant is no longer sustainable in its current format and its overall impact has reduced.

As part of this review and to ensure resources are used in the most effective way, the Short Breaks Grant will no longer be offered. This decision allows us to focus on developing a local offer that is fair, equitable, and delivers the greatest impact for families.

Work is already underway to develop the new core offer and we remain fully committed to co-producing this with Parent Carer Voice, so that future support truly reflects what matters most to you.
