SEND and school provision

Find out about SEND provision for children and young people in North Yorkshire schools.

Schools in North Yorkshire

Most children's needs can be met in a mainstream school, this means that children can go to school in their community. The following services are available to schools needing help in supporting their students, each service will have an application criteria:

  • North Yorkshire Locality Boards
  • SEND Hubs
  • targeted mainstream provision for those needing more targeted support

If a child or young person's needs cannot be met in a mainstream school or setting with the involvement of the SEND hubs, they may require a special school place. Except in very rare circumstances, special schools take pupils with an education, health and care plan (EHCP).

North Yorkshire Locality Boards

Locality Boards are a dynamic collaboration between education leaders and North Yorkshire Council. There are five boards each representing a different area of the county:

  • Craven Locality Board
  • Harrogate Knaresborough Ripon Locality Board
  • Hambleton Richmondshire Locality Board
  • Scarborough Whitby Ryedale Locality Board
  • Selby Locality Board

Each board shares the aim of maximising outcomes and promoting inclusivity for children and young people aged from 0 to 25 years old.

North Yorkshire Council allocates an annual budget to each board, enabling them to initiate projects tailored to the evolving needs of their communities. To find out more about the boards and the projects on offer, visit the North Yorkshire Locality Board website.
