Whitby Maritime Training Hub

The Whitby Maritime Training Hub aims to breathe new life into Whitby’s maritime industry, helping to diversify the economy and provide opportunities in the maritime and marine industries for our local people.

This £10 million project is situated on Endeavour Wharf, a site of maritime activity since the 1800s, from fishing to boat building and today remains an operational wharf as well as providing car parking facilities.

This project addresses a need to develop a better supply of technical abilities to meet the demand in both developing new skills and recertification. Additionally, the Hub will also provide accommodation for maritime businesses and service providers to support economy growth and resilience within the local community.

Construction of the Maritime Hub began in April 2025, with the main contracts of work completed in April 2026. Additional works to complete the interior fit-out will begin in June 2026 and are expected to be completed in autumn 2026.

Throughout the construction of the building, developers Willmott Dixon have supported a range of community initiatives such as:

created five jobs for local people
provided apprenticeships and on-site work placements
ran learning experiences for local schools and colleges to help young people understand careers in the sector
supported local organisations including Whitby Lobster Hatchery, Whitby Food Bank, Whitby Wardrobe and the Happy Days Centre with over 100 volunteering hours
donated to local causes including personal protective equipment for Whitby Fishing School and the Whitby defibrillator project
invested in local biodiversity and sustainability initiatives

Construction timeline

The main construction of the hub is now complete. Interior works will begin in June 2026, with the full completion expected in autumn 2026.

Public car parking

Upon completion of the construction, 198 parking spaces, including spaces for disabled parking, will be available on the site. From June 2026, up to 55 spaces will be available for public use while further works are carried out, alongside access for harbour users.

Building height

The Whitby Maritime Hub will have an approximate height of 15 metres.

Flood plain information

Endeavour Wharf is classified as a 3B flood plain. The building has been designed to be flood resilient, and the Environment Agency has approved this design with the condition that the hub is used only for water-compatible purposes as defined by the national planning policy framework.
