Moratorium period
The council was informed of an intention to dispose of Markington Village Hall and Post Office on 17 January 2024 and an Interim Moratorium Period was put in place ending on 27 February 2024. On 2 February 2024 a request was received from Markington with Wallerthwaite Parish Council to be treated as a potential bidder for the property. The written request from an eligible community interest group within the Interim moratorium period initiated the full moratorium period that will operate for six months from 17 January 2024 to 16 July 2024.
During this period the owner may continue to market and negotiate sales but may not exchange contracts or enter into a binding contract to do so later. There is one exception where the property may be sold to a community interest group during the moratorium period. If a bid is received, the owner may choose to accept or decline the offer and, once the full six month moratorium period has ended (if initiated), they are free to sell to whomever they choose and at whatever price. No further moratorium will apply for the remainder of a protected period lasting 18 months ending on 16 July 2025.
