Some people aren't counted when calculating council tax bills. This is called Council Tax disregard.
If you live with someone who isn't counted, you might be able to get a 25% discount off your bill. The actual discount depends on the number of adults living in the property.
These people are disregarded (not counted) for Council Tax:
People in education or training
You can claim Council Tax disregard online for:

- a spouse, civil partner or dependant of a foreign student
People receiving medical care or support, or caregivers
You can claim Council Tax disregard online for:
People in particular jobs

People receiving child benefit
Contact us to ask about Council Tax disregard if you live with someone (usually under 19) who gets child benefit.
People with specific living arrangements
You can claim Council Tax disregard online for:
- persons in detention such as people in prison

If there is only one adult in your property that does not fit in to one of the above categories, you may be entitled to a 25% discount.
If all the adults in your property fit in to one of the above categories, you may be entitled to a discount or an exemption.
