Outdoor learning centres

Find out about the outdoor learning and training courses at East Barnby and Bewerley Park for children and young people, adults and youth leaders.

We provide challenge, adventure and educational activities for a wide range of groups and students at two centres. Activities include:

  • courses for primary, secondary or higher education, including outdoor and adventurous activities, environmental studies, GCSE or A Level fieldwork
  • an outreach service to take activities to your base, or another venue - almost all activities available at the centres are also available through the outreach service
  • day use of the centres, allowing you to focus on a specific activity while making use of our facilities and expert teaching staff
  • weekends and school holidays are available for any group, allowing a catered residential-only or full or part-taught course
  • GNVQ leadership and team building courses
  • specialist courses and nationally recognised qualifications in a wide range of outdoor activities
  • special needs groups - we have experience in designing courses for groups with specific physical and educational needs

We also pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to any situation, so please contact us to discuss your requirements.

What we offer for adults

We are affiliated to or approved by many outdoor and adventurous activities organisations. These include the Royal Yachting Association for sailing, windsurfing and powerboating, the British Canoe Union, the British Orienteering Federation, the Mountain Leader Training Board, the Mountain Bike Instructor Award Scheme, the British Caving Association and Rescue and Emergency Care for first aid training. You can view our outdoor education for adults course calendar here.

We offer a range of services and can tailor courses to clients' needs. These can be based on a residential or non-residential basis, over any period of time and in a variety of locations. Most courses include full board and lodgings in addition to tuition, loan of specialist equipment and transport while at the centre.

With over 30 activities to choose from, our adventure and field study activities encourage teamwork, problem solving and effective communication, combined with real adventurous experiences.

Our excellent resources and experienced teachers are crucial to the way in which we work. We aim to provide a differentiated course, negotiated before your visit, which will provide active and inspirational learning opportunities for all who attend the centre or use our outreach facilities.

Our aim is to provide you with a first class experience, whether it's a first time field studies residential or expedition training. We endeavour to provide opportunities that are full of learning, adventure and challenge but flexible enough to take into account the weather and the needs of the group.

Your stay will be in comfortable and centrally heated dormitories, each sleeping between 10 and 28 guests. Benefiting from full modification and decoration during 2005, all our dormitories are equipped with modern washing, showering and toilet facilities with access to drying facilities. The main building includes a dining room, lounge, staff lounge, games room, library facilities and a small shop.

Other facilities available during your stay include digital imagery equipment, video coaching facilities, a computer suite, art facilities, classroom space, football field and tennis/basketball courts.

With taught or self-programmed week, weekend, day or half week courses, based at our site or yours, East Barnby is proud to be as flexible as possible to the needs of our clients. The surrounding area contains magnificent moorland gritstone and limestone scenery with the River Nidd and reservoirs, How Stean Gorge, Brimham Rocks and attractive Dales' villages and farms.

Accommodation is in attractive, single storey, centrally heated bungalows giving comfortable living for a total of 120 students, together with ample toilet, washing and shower facilities and drying rooms. Visiting staff are accommodated in single or double rooms adjoining the student dormitories. All are comfortably furnished with duvet quilts, beds and linen, wardrobes, carpets, shaving points, kettles and hairdryers.

Adult courses are accommodated in a new block built in 2005 which consists of five units, each for a maximum of four people. Each unit has en-suite facilities.

Facilities include a library of reference books, a students' common room, assembly hall with stage, surgery and first aid facilities, students' shop, games field, camping area, ropes and adventure course. Bewerley Park Centre also offers permanent orienteering courses, classrooms and study areas for environmental follow up work, audio/visual aid equipment, car parking and an outdoor heated swimming pool.

Activities available include rock climbing, hill walking, camping, sailing, orienteering, canoeing and kayaking, caving, ropes course, gorge walking, mountain biking and skiing. The level of outdoor pursuits depends largely on the age, experience and interest of the students, but most courses consist of a basic introduction to the activity. Five day extension courses involve the students in a more intense level of activity and skill so that some previous experience is usually helpful but not essential.
