I began my career at the council as an Assistant Highway Officer, initially with limited knowledge of Highways. However, working alongside Highway Officers and Project Engineers, while simultaneously pursuing my Higher National Certificate in Civil Engineering on a day-release basis, enabled me to rapidly expand my expertise and advance within the department.
When an opportunity arose for a Highway Officer position, my manager encouraged me to apply. The skills I had gained in a short time supported my successful transition into the role.
Taking on additional responsibilities and assisting Project Engineers with scheme design provided valuable insight into the complexities of the profession, further shaping my understanding and experience.
Now, as a Project Engineer, my role is dynamic and fast-paced, involving the scoping, design, and management of maintenance schemes. Identifying sites in need of maintenance to overseeing the project through the design phase and ultimately managing projects on the ground, is incredibly rewarding.
