Housing Maintenance opportunities

We are recruiting for various roles within our Homes and Places Housing Maintenance team, responsible for maintaining our social housing portfolio of around 8,500 homes.

The Homes and Places Housing Maintenance team are responsible for ensuring that our social housing portfolio of circa 8,500 dwellings is maintained to meet all current statutory, regulatory, and legislative standards.

We are recruiting plumbers, joiners and maintenance operatives within our growing Homes and Places team. 

It is an exciting time to join North Yorkshire Council. In April 2023, eight former smaller councils unified, offering increasing opportunities within the service. The Homes and Places Team have a strong reputation and can offer a career where you are truly supported to develop your skills and flourish with the support of colleagues.

Our current job opportunities

We currently have opportunities available for joiners, plumbers and maintenance operatives to be based at either Selby, Richmond or Harrogate.

Plumber (£29,269 to £32,076)

The core focus of this role is to carry out essential maintenance, refurbishment or construction works on social housing stock to ensure they meet Housing Standards. You will be provided with a business van and equipment to enable you to complete your tasks with the requirement to comply with vehicle use and maintenance policy.

You will have relevant qualifications and experience in a specialist trade relating to domestic plumbing operations. You will have experience working in a domestic setting and be familiar with materials, tools and machinery used in the repair, maintenance, or construction of homes.  You will have an understanding of health and safety.

Joiner (£26,873 to £29,269)  

The core focus of this role is to carry out essential maintenance, refurbishment or construction works on social housing stock to ensure they meet Housing Standards. You will have relevant qualifications and experience in a building related trade such as hard landscaping, plastering or painting. You will have experience working in a domestic setting and be familiar with building materials, tools and machinery used in the repair, maintenance, or construction of homes.  You will have an understanding of health and safety.

Paul Cole

"I embarked on my journey with the council 12 years ago as a Maintenance Operative Electrician, transitioning from a self-employed background where I owned my own business. At the age of 43, I sought the stability and sense of purpose that a secure job could provide. Little did I know that this decision would lead to an enriching and fulfilling career.

Within just three years, I found myself progressing into a supervisory role within the electrical domain. The council recognised my potential and dedication, offering me the opportunity to manage a diverse team of tradespeople as part of the Void Refurbishment Programme. This marked the beginning of a transformative phase in my career.

The council has been the catalyst for my professional growth, providing me with various management training programs and coaching opportunities. Currently, I am enrolled in a Senior Management apprenticeship, a challenging yet rewarding endeavour that I aim to complete this year.

Over the past few years, I've had the privilege of managing the Repairs Department, honing my leadership skills, and contributing to the efficient functioning of crucial services. Presently, I am at the helm of the Planned Works Team, overseeing housing improvement programs across the council.

The council's commitment to employee development and progression has not only allowed me to broaden my skill set but has also empowered me to take on diverse and challenging roles. I am grateful for the trust and support the council has placed in me, fostering an environment that encourages continuous learning and professional excellence.

My journey with the council has not only provided job security but has given me a platform to thrive, evolve, and contribute meaningfully to the community. I am proud to be a part of an organisation that values its employees and invests in their success."

I have worked for Property with the council for over 11 years and In this time my role has progressed through to management stages. 

From starting as a customer services advisor to now been in charge of contractors and the improvements we do for our tenants in their home.
