What will the Selby Heritage Action Zone grants do?
The grants are available to businesses in historic properties in Selby Heritage Action Zone. The aim is to address inappropriate alterations to our historic properties and carry out repairs to preserve and enhance the heritage of the town centre. This project will make the town centre an attractive place to visit for local residents and visitors from further afield which in turn supports the local economy.
These improvement works may be to multiple areas of external repair in one property (windows, doors, shopfront, roof, guttering, internal works), several connected features across more than one property, or works to bring long term vacant historic properties back into use.
Who can apply?
Business premises, with some heritage value, within the Heritage Action Zone boundary (pdf / 170 KB) can be considered under the Renovate and Repurpose Grant Scheme.
To be eligible to apply you need to be the owner or representative that has the legal responsibility for the repair of the building. This is likely to be the owner but could be a tenant that has a repairing lease that covers the building beyond the project term end of March 2024.
Applications for grant funding are closed for 2022/23 - please check back later for possible additional grants at a later date.
Eligible works
The programme has been designed to help make high streets more successful by using heritage as a catalyst for wider economic and social regeneration. Practical activities for regeneration can be in part, grant-funded by Historic England. Grant assistance may be available for the following work:
- structural repairs both internal and external
- reinstating lost architectural features
- works to the public realm around historic properties
- Works to bring vacant heritage buildings into use – including alternative uses that better meet the demand of the area
- consultancy Services
We cannot provide funding for any pre-existing works or projects started before the contract is signed and all applications will be assessed on a first come, first served basis, and the focus is primarily on those of heritage value. It may not be possible to support all eligible applications due to the limited pot of grant money available from Historic England, and the percentage of grant fund available will be decided on a case-by-case basis, with some match funding required.
Grant application process
Contact Heritage Action Zone project manager through an expression of interest form for an informal meeting to discuss the eligibility of potential works to the property with the project manager and the architectural team. The expression of interest will open discussions with the project team but is no guarantee of a grant and any information you submit may be validated by site visits from officers or architectural team.
An acceptable expression of interest does not guarantee grant funding will be available for your project. Grants are only available to business owners/leaseholders of buildings within the High Street Heritage Action Zone boundary and who meet the criteria. Any information you submit may be validated by site visits from council officers or architectural team.
