Electors are being urged to return their postal votes in good time to ensure their vote counts in next week’s parliamentary by-election for the Selby and Ainsty constituency.

They must be received by 10pm on election day – Thursday, 20 July.

They can be either posted back or hand delivered to The Acting Returning Officer, North Yorkshire Council, Civic Centre, War Memorial Square, Doncaster Road, Selby, YO8 1TN, or taken to any polling station in the constituency, between 7am and 10pm on election day.

Acting Returning Officer, Richard Flinton, said: “We urge voters to make sure they have a say in this election by returning their postal votes early.”

Anyone that has requested a postal pack but has not received it by 14 July can have it reissued – call 0300 131 2 131 for advice.

The by-election is being held after MP Nigel Adams announced that he was resigning from the Selby and Ainsty parliamentary seat, which he has held since 2010.

Voters will need to bring photographic identification to be able to vote.

Accepted forms of ID include a UK or Northern Ireland photocard driving licence, full or provisional, a UK passport or a passport issued by the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the Isle of Man, or any of the Channel Islands, and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass or blue badge. Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.
