An innovative project to support parents and carers through healthy development in the early years has been launched at Northallerton Library.

Brightly coloured boxes filled with games and activities to encourage early speech, language, communication, and numeracy are now available to library visitors.

Northallerton Library is one of 14 libraries across the Yorkshire and Humber region to offer the playbox initiative, which is part of a project to mark the recent Coronation of King Charles III.

The free-to-use boxes include items from measuring spoons to a dustpan and brush, pegs for counting and ping pong balls.

Executive member for libraries, Cllr Simon Myers, said: “The playbox project is a great example of how libraries can be hubs for creativity, learning and innovation.

“Northallerton Library is now a place where families can come together and experience something fun and interactive in a supportive and welcoming environment.

“It is hoped the boxes will help boost creativity, while supporting local families with their learning both at home and in the library.”

The project has been developed by Leeds Libraries in partnership with Playful Anywhere and Play Explore Art. It has been funded by Arts Council England and Libraries Connected Yorkshire and Humber.
