The cliff lift in Whitby closed in 2022 after structural corrosion made it unsafe to operate.
Restoring the lift is possible, but it would be costly. Ongoing issues like water getting in, poor ventilation, and high maintenance costs would still be a problem.
Since 2022, a free replacement bus service has been provided to take passengers down to the promenade between the start of May and the end of September.
On average, there were 630 single journeys per month, which equates to around 21 per day. Therefore, we are consulting on the future operation of the service.
