This is a plan view illustrating a proposal to introduce new traffic signals at the Spital Bridge, Larpool Lane and A171 New Bridge junction.
The current signalised pedestrian crossing and island would be removed, and new pedestrian crossings would be proposed, making it easier and safer for pedestrians to get around the junction.
The pavement would be widened on three corners, making room for planting on either side of the junction of Spital Bridge, which would create a green separation between pedestrians and vehicles on the road.
The planting could consist of native species to enhance biodiversity, some ornamental plants that feature in Pannett Park, as well as trees to help screen views of the junction for residents on Helredale Road.

This diagram compares the average vehicle queue lengths that occur now on an August bank holiday with the average queue lengths that would be expected if the new signals were installed. The average queue lengths now are shown in orange, and the expected queue lengths are shown in green.
Inevitably the introduction of signals will mean some additional queuing on the main A171 as shown on the illustration, but it would provide safer and easier access for drivers from the side roads and much better all-round facilities for pedestrians.
