This is a photograph facing south along New Quay Road. There is a central island in the foreground that pedestrians use to cross the road. The existing roundabout is in the mid-ground and the train station is in the background.
This is an artist’s sketch to illustrate how the new street arrangement at New Quay Road could look, looking towards the train station.
The roundabout and the three traffic islands at the junction of Station Square, Langborne Road and New Quay Road would be removed. The space would be used for pavement widening, new seating, and new planters and trees. The design aims to provide more space for pedestrians and to welcome them into the heart of Whitby. Raised crossing points also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road.
This plan shows the road junction of Langborne Road, Station Square and New Quay Road from above, illustrating how the new street arrangement could look.
The footpath outside Trenchers restaurant and the public toilets would be widened, and new seating added with planting.
With the roundabout and the three traffic islands removed, Station Square onto Langborne Road would become the main road and traffic would be encouraged towards the car parks along Langborne Road.
There would be two new flat-topped speed tables at the junction (similar to the one already on St Ann’s Staith at the junction with New Quay Road) for pedestrians to cross on, one on New Quay Road and one on Langborne Road.
