Refugee resettlement privacy notice

This privacy notice is designed to help you understand how and why the council process your personal data in relation to the refugee resettlement scheme. This notice should be read in conjunction with our corporate privacy notice.

Who are we?

North Yorkshire Council is a ‘data controller’ as defined by Article 4(7) of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).

What personal information do we collect?

The council, and its resettlement partners, hold information about you, your family, and your personal circumstances.

This could include but is not limited to your name, addresses, date of birth, and other relevant personal identifiers.

Information about you that we hold includes information taken from your ‘UNHCR resettlement registration form’ and your ‘migration health assessment’ which were completed prior to your resettlement to the UK.

We also hold information that has been gathered since your arrival to the UK. This includes information about your education, health, housing, welfare, and social care requirements.

Why do we collect your personal information?

We collect and process your personal information in order to provide you with resettlement in the UK. This could include providing adequate housing, health, education and welfare benefits.

Who do we share this information with?

Within the council only authorised officers will have access to your personal information in order to facilitate the scheme.

The following organisations are partnered with the council as part of the refugee resettlement scheme(s).

These partners may provide the council with information about you and may receive information about you if necessary for the purposes of your resettlement:

  • home office UK
  • migration Yorkshire (Leeds city council)
  • North Yorkshire police
  • certain NHS bodies including GP practices
  • department of work and pensions
  • the refugee council UK
  • housing association

The council will only share data with the partners named above if they need it. For example, North Yorkshire police will not receive your medical data unless there is a legitimate reason for them to access this data.

The council will not give information about you to anyone other than the organisations listed above unless the council has your consent or if a legal obligation compels us to do so.

How long do we keep your information for?

Your personal data will be kept by the resettlement partners for six years following completion of your resettlement.

What is our lawful basis for processing your information?

The council and its resettlement partners are relying on their legal powers and official authority to process your personal data and your special category data.
