The type of residential home which is best for you depends upon what your needs are.
Care homes
Residents of care homes have their own rooms, sometimes with a private bathroom. There could also be access to other facilities.
Care homes will help you with any assessed personal care needs. These could be:
- getting up in the morning
- going to bed at night
- dressing
- washing
- using the toilet
They will also:
- supervise or administer medication
- provide all meals
- provide care during short illnesses but not long term nursing care (there will be someone on call at night)
Most care homes will also offer some social activities.
Nursing homes
Nursing homes are suitable for people who need long-term specialist nursing care. This could include people needing extra help with lifting and transfers, such as:
- moving from a bed to a chair
- moving from a chair to the toilet
In a nursing home, personal care will include help with:
- getting up and going to bed
- dressing
- washing
- using the toilet
- administering or supervising medication
In a nursing care home there will always be a qualified nurse on duty.
Nursing tasks will include:
- dressings
- injections
- pressure sore care
Some nursing homes have beds registered only for personal care and the rest for nursing care. In others all beds are available for nursing care.
