North Yorkshire Youth Justice Service works with children aged 10 to 17. We are part of Early Help, which is part of the North Yorkshire Children and Families Service. Our team includes people from:
- children’s social care
- the police
- probation
- education
- health
We also work with local groups and communities. Together we:
- help stop children from committing crimes
- support children who have broken the law
- respect the rights of victims and follow the Victims’ Code
- treat everyone with respect, fairness and honesty
- treat everyone equally
Our main goal
Our main goal is to reduce the number of children who get into trouble with the police. We do this by:
- working with children, their families, schools and communities to support positive change
- helping both children and their families, and the victims of crime
- being committed to keeping children and communities safe
We follow the National Standards which can be found on the government website. We also follow the Child First approach, which means we always put the child’s needs first. We aim to:
- make children’s best interests our priority
- focus our work on what each child needs
- build supportive relationships that help children reach their potential
- actively involve children and carers in all our work
- help children enjoy their childhood away from crime
- treat everyone with respect and care

Volunteering opportunities
We are always happy to hear from people who want to volunteer. We give training and support so you can make a real difference. Volunteers can help in four main ways:
- referral panel members meet with children, parents or victims to make a plan that repairs harm and stops further offending
- appropriate adults support children at the police station if their parents can’t be there
- reparation supervisors supervise children doing unpaid community work
- mentors meet one-to-one with children each week to help them stay out of trouble
If you would like to volunteer, please contact us for further information.
