This leaflet is from North Yorkshire Council.

What is the leaflet about?

The leaflet tells you about our plan for children and young people with SEND who live in North Yorkshire.
The plan is called the strategic plan for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) education provision 2018-2023.
The leaflet also tells you what we have done since we wrote the plan.

How did we write the plan?

We asked children and young people with SEND what they thought our plan should say.
We also asked their parents and carers and the people who work with them.
Then, we wrote our plan and asked people to tell us if they agreed or disagreed with it.

People told us that overall they liked what is in the plan.
They thought some things should be changed. We listened and made some changes to the plan.

What does our plan say?

People told us that overall they liked what is in the plan.
They thought some things should be changed. We listened and made some changes to the plan.

The plan says we want children and young people with SEND to be with their friends.

And we want them to go to school as close to their home as possible.

The plan says we want children and young people with SEND to do well with their learning and be ready for adult life.

But we must to do this with the money we have – this is called our ‘high needs budget’.
It will take us several years to do all the things in the plan.

What have we done so far?

More children and young people with SEND are getting the support they need.

More children and young people with an education, health and care plan (EHCP) can go their local school.
We make sure their plan is written and agreed in 20 weeks.
Most of the parents and carers of children and young people with an EHCP are happy with their plan.

There are 10 special schools in North Yorkshire.
OFSTED says 9 of them are good or outstanding.

We are setting up five local groups.
The groups are called locality boards.
They will check that we are providing the right things for children and young people with SEND in the area.

We are setting up teams of teachers, parents, carers, and people from the council in each local area.
They will get to know and look after young people with SEND in the local area.
They are called SEND locality based teams.

We check all the time to make sure we are keeping on track with the plan.
We want to know that things are getting better for children and young people with SEND.

What are we going to do next?

There is a second part to the plan.
We call this ‘phase 2’.
It is about the other work we need to do to make sure there are enough places for children and young people with SEND.
People will be able to tell us what they think about the work in phase 2.
