Ready for anything volunteering

When there's an emergency incident such as flooding, you can help support people in your community to stay safe and informed.

Following the devastation caused by the Boxing Day floods in 2015, Ready for Anything was set up in York and is now being rolled out across the whole of North Yorkshire. During the floods, resources were stretched, however the practical support offered by members of the public and businesses was invaluable. To ensure the response is even better in the future, we are creating a database of enthusiastic volunteers who we can call upon to help.

How you can help

In the event of an emergency in your area we would contact you to ask you to help. Our volunteers will be on a database, ready to be contacted only if an emergency happens in their area. The range of tasks will vary depending on the nature of the event, but examples include knocking on doors, signposting people in your community to the nearest information point or rest centre, helping to serve drinks or food in a rest centre, or help with clearing up afterwards.

The benefits to you

This is a chance for you to help your local community when they most need it. There is also no minimum commitment requirement, so this is the perfect volunteering opportunity if you can’t regularly committee to volunteer. It could also show a potential employer that that you are prepared to step forward when needed and want to give something back.

What skills and experience are required?

No previous skills or experience are required, just a willingness to help out when needed.

What days / times are available or needed?

There is no obligation to offer a regular commitment, but we will notify you by text message if we need support during an incident nearby. They may not happen frequently, but we can’t always predict when emergencies will occur! Outside of emergencies, you will receive emails where we will tell you about any updates, recent incidents or upcoming training sessions.

What training is offered?

You will be given an induction session at the start and then you will be invited to annual training events and to participate in any live or table top multi-agency exercises that take place.

What references or checks are needed?

This role does not need a disclosure and barring service (DBS) check. We only require you to register with our online database.
