Customer online Council Tax portal

Access our new online Council Tax portal.

We have built a new online portal which gives you quick, convenient and secure access to your Council Tax account information.

Signing up to the portal gives you access to:

  • make service requests with our new online forms
  • sign up for electronic billing so that you can view all correspondence from the council in a secure portal
  • change the payment details we use to request your payments and the date on which they are taken
  • view your instalments, when they are due and that you are up to date with payments
  • update your contact details
  • add notes to your account for our team to pick up

To do this you first need to sign up for a North Yorkshire Council My Account and then register your Council Tax information to link it to your account.

To sign up to the portal you will need your new Council Tax reference number.

New reference numbers are:

  • 12 or 13 digits long
  • start with a number '9'

You can find your new reference number on letters and emails we sent you since 1 June 2025.

In Direct Debit emails and letters, your new account reference number is referred to as the ‘new originator reference’.

All Council Tax payers will have been sent a new reference number by the next annual billing cycle.

Why do I have a new account reference number and where can I find this?

In June 2025, we brought seven systems from the legacy district and borough councils into one system which is quicker, easier and more convenient.

This system upgrade means that every Council Tax account in the county now has a new 12 or 13 digit reference number which starts with ‘9’.

This number will only be shown on letters and emails we sent you since 1 June 2025, including letters and emails telling you about a change of reference number related to Direct Debit.

Why do I have to sign up and register again when I used to have a portal account?

Before June 2025, the seven legacy district and borough council areas all had different systems and different portal arrangements.

We have now brought everyone’s accounts together into one system with a new customer portal. This does mean you will need to sign up for a North Yorkshire Council MyAccount and register your Council Tax or business rates information as previous portals are no longer active. However once this is done you will have access to many benefits.

Do I need an account to pay my bill?

No, you can still pay your bill without having a portal account via:

  • Direct Debit
  • online payment
  • phone
  • at the Post Office and PayPoint

Can I set up an account on behalf of someone else, for example as a carer?

Yes, you sign up for an account on behalf of another person where you have the authority to do so.

When registering Council Tax information to link it to the North Yorkshire MyAccount, you must remember to enter that person’s Council Tax details, not your own.

Can I have a separate portal login to my partner or spouse if we are on the same account?

Yes, absolutely. Each user can create their own North Yorkshire MyAccount using their own details and register their Council Tax information, as long as they match the names we have on file for the account.

I've moved out of the area. Can I still set up an account to see my old bills?

If you are still liable for Council Tax, for example you remain responsible because you still own a property in our area which is empty, then you can sign up for an account. However if your Council Tax liability has ended, you will not be able to register for an account.

I have received an email advising that I can view my bill but I have never registered for the portal. What should I do?

If you have received an email from no.reply@northyorks.gov.uk advising that you have a new bill to view, but you have not yet registered to access our portal, then you will need to set up an account using your email address.

The short video above shows you how to create an account. You will need to link your Council Tax account to your portal login. The details to link your account are included in the email that you have received. Please make sure you enter your name exactly as shown in the email, as well as the account reference and the online key. You will also need to enter the post code of the property the bill relates to as part of the verification process.

I am a resident of the legacy Craven area and used to receive my bill as a PDF attachment. Why am I now receiving an email with a link?

Following the launch of our portal, we no longer issue bills as a PDF document by email.

You can see your latest and previous bills, as well as view your account in real-time by signing up for our portal as demonstrated in the short video above. The details to link your Council Tax account are included in the email that you have received. Please make sure you enter your name exactly as shown on the email, as well as the account reference and the online key. You will also need to enter the post code of the property the bill relates to as part of the verification process.

I have registered for the portal and have more than one Council Tax account, but I cannot see them all. How do I view them all?

When you are signed in to your portal account, all your live Council Tax accounts with a balance should be displayed.

You can view any accounts with a nil balance by toggling the “Show all” switch on the account details page. If all your accounts do not show after changing this setting, then it is possible that we may not have them all linked in our back-office system. If this is the case, please contact us and we can arrange to update this.
