Hear from some of our team

Jackie

"I have always been a people person, so working in customer services is a natural fit for me. No two days or two calls are the same keeping my shifts varied and fresh. The added satisfaction of knowing I have helped to solve someone’s problem makes it a job I love!

I am excited at the prospect of being part of the ongoing transformation of North Yorkshire Council and the opportunities and learning this will bring with it."

Richard

"After a significant blow to my life, I felt it time to change direction. I saw advertised the role of customer services officer and thought why not.

That day turned out to be my lucky day. I started working in the customer service team at the end of February 2022. I was welcomed from that first moment. Training was thorough and gave me all the tools I needed to go solo. I truly started learning from then and I am still constantly learning. I have full support from all my team, the knowledge sharing is second to none from the team and wider council community. My experience has only been a positive one. That feeling of a job well done comes at the end of most calls."

Rachael

"I have worked in customer service for North Yorkshire Council for a year and a half. It is a fun, interesting, busy and diverse role where every query into the centre is different and no day is the same.

The customer service team that I work in is hard-working and supportive and we have a lot of fun. We also learn on the job every single day owing to the wide and varied customer queries, and the fluidity of changing processes.

I have found that North Yorkshire Council are a flexible, accommodating and supportive employer, which has enabled me to succeed in my role.

Being in customer service gives me huge job satisfaction as I am in a role where people in the community need your help, support and guidance and even to be an agony aunt at times!

If you love talking to people, enjoy being part of a team and you love learning new skills and want the opportunity to further your career, then I cannot recommend customer services enough."

Yvonne

"I have been in customer services all of my life, but since having the opportunity to join the council, I have really felt that I achieve helping others.

With a knowledgeable and experienced team always at hand to help and advise, I have learnt so much already, enabling me to confidently advise others.

There is a great support network to make a real difference to the people in the local communities.

In this job you have to be able to deal with customers on all levels, help people help themselves, adapt quickly, be a team player but above all a great listener.

No two days are the same and I am really enjoying the opportunity!"

Silas - Services Manager, Corporate Systems

"I started my career within the customer services team over 13 years ago. As a young person new to the workplace and someone who never knew what they wanted to be when they grew up, the customer service team provided me with a solid foundation and understanding about all facets of local government, the wide range of services it provides and the customer first approach which I have taken with me throughout my employment.

Since joining the council I have been able to combine a personal passion for technology and its infinite uses to the IT services utilised. I have subsequently held several roles across the technology department and progressed to now managing the corporate systems team. Our purpose is to develop, enhance, administer and support key management information systems, aligning the current and future needs of the organisation and its customers to the right technology, ensuring they are delivered to the agreed standard.

To this day I continue to work closely with the customer services teams where I first started. I am able to reflect fondly on the journey I have been on and the opportunities I have been afforded throughout my time working within local government, customer services and the technology department."

Sophie

“As a new starter to the council just over a year ago, I am thoroughly enjoying being part of the customer services team. I have learnt a substantial amount about all that the council has to offer starting at a district level for the first year, through the local government reorganisation as we have merged into the new unitary council for North Yorkshire.

Everyone is extremely helpful in the training process and beyond as there is always something new to learn each day. Customer services is a very varied job as no two days are the same with the diverse range of enquiries over the phone, face-to-face and via online channels. The days fly by with the varied enquiries, surrounded by supportive co-workers and the satisfaction that we have helped and assisted members of the public."
