Information for chaperones on allegations

Managing allegations against those who work or volunteer with children

In your work as a chaperone you could become subject to an allegation. This could arise from your work as a chaperone, in relation to other work or volunteering that you do, or in relation to your own children.

The allegation process is defined in the Working together to safeguard children 2018 guidance which you can find on the Government website. This applies to all people who work or volunteer with children.

The procedures will be applied when there is an allegation that a chaperone has:

  • behaved in a way that has harmed a child or may have harmed a child
  • possibly committed a criminal offence against or related to a child
  • behaved towards a child or children in a way that indicates they may pose a risk of harm to children
  • behaved or may have behaved in a way that indicates they may not be suitable to work with children

You will be informed as soon as possible if an allegation is made against you and advised how any such allegation will be investigated. Once any investigation has been concluded, a decision will be made as to whether you can continue to do chaperone work and you will be informed in writing of the outcome and any decisions taken.

You can find the full procedures on the Safeguarding Children website
