Drains, sewers and septic tanks

Private drainage systems such as septic tanks are the responsibility of the landowner. We have a statutory duty in the interests of public health to ensure that blocked and foul-smelling private drains are cleared.  

Our environmental health team can investigate complaints about defective septic tanks, blocked or defective drains and bad smells or odours. 

If the owner of the drainage system doesn't fix the problem we can serve a statutory notice and: 

• arrange for works to be carried out
• recover costs from the owners
