Early years letter to parents

Early years education and childcare for children in North Yorkshire

On behalf of North Yorkshire Council, we would like to welcome you and your family to North Yorkshire.

Early years means children who are aged 0 to 5 years and before they start compulsory school (this is before a reception class in a school).

There are lots of different places (early years settings) your child can go to play, make new friends, have fun – whilst learning at the same time! You may need to pay for your child to attend an early years setting but some children receive free early years education and childcare.

Free education and childcare places (funded by the government)

Two year old children

Some two year old children are able to take up 15 hours a week of free education and childcare the term after their 2nd birthday. This depends on family income and whether you receive certain benefits. Information about two year old funding and how to apply for this funding is on our website.

We can help you with your application by contacting our Families Information Service

Three year old children

All children are entitled for to up to 15 hours a week free education and childcare the term after their 3rd birthday. You do not need to apply for this.

In addition to the 15 hours, some families may be entitled to claim an extra 15 hours a week of education and childcare, bringing the total up to 30 hours a week. You have to apply for this additional funding through the Childcare Choices website
