Your guide to events which are taking place across the county

As we head towards summer, there is so much to do across North Yorkshire, whether that is on our fabulous coast, the Dales and Moors or in our beautiful towns.

If you are looking to get out and about over the next few weeks, here is a guide to what’s on across the county.

We cannot include every event here, so be sure to keep a look-out for local events where you live.

Eden Camp, near Malton, is staging its Tank Week over the May half-term.

The modern history museum is bringing history roaring back to life with a full week dedicated to the power, engineering, and legacy of some of the most famous armoured vehicles in military history.

Highlights include live tank demonstrations, engine start-ups and walkarounds, tank talks and interactive displays and exhibitions.

Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 June

Bramham International Horse Trials take place at Bramham Park, at Bramham, near Wetherby on North Yorkshire’s border with West Yorkshire.

The event at Bramham first ran in 1974 and was set up by George Lane Fox. The Lane Fox family are still hosts of the event today.

The formidable cross-country course is designed by Andrew Heffernan.

The Swaledale Festival features more than with 60 music, arts and walking events in the spectacular northern Yorkshire Dales.

The festival will take place across Swaledale, Wensleydale, and Arkengarthdale in a variety of locations.

It will feature classical, folk, worldwide and jazz musicians as well as rising stars.

There will be theatre, film, comedy, talks and puppetry, and opportunities to participate and create from Swedish basketry and landscape photography to the opening Fauré Requiem Singing Day and 12 guided walks across the Dales.

Designed for War: The graphic power of Second World War posters is an exhibition being staged at Skipton Town Hall.

Marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day, this exhibition explores the power of design in shaping public perception and fuelling the war effort.

Highlighting a wide selection of posters donated to Craven Museum by W.W Holgate which were collected during the war itself alongside objects from the museum’s collection, it connects national narratives to the local histories of Craven and beyond.

The venue is open Monday to Saturday, from 9.30am until 4.30pm and entry is free.

Friday 30 May to Sunday 1 June

Scarborough Streets features free street performances, activities, walkabout acts and workshops on Westborough, Aberdeen Walk, North Street and in the Crescent Gardens.

Scarborough Streets is one of five festivals featuring more than 260 events in 74 locations, all of which together form this year’s Scarborough Fair programme.

There will be music, circus, puppetry, magic, face painting and crafting and a replica Victorian bathing machine.

Saturday 31 May

Get up close with the magnificent birds from Whitby Falconers at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from 9.30am until 4.30pm. The birds are free to view, with a small handling charge.

As part of the nationwide Railway 200 celebrations, which mark the 200th anniversary of the modern railway, staff at the North Yorkshire line are also running a writing and art competition inviting young creatives to imagine their own train-inspired tales or artworks.

Judges include children’s authors G.M. Leonard and Peter Bently, with winners receiving a family day rover ticket. The deadline for entries is Sunday 2 November 2025.

Get up close with the magnificent birds from Whitby Falconers at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on Saturday 31 May from 9.30am until 4.30pm.

Sunday 1 June

Great Ouseburn Garden Festival is a fantastic day out in one of North Yorkshire's most picturesque and friendly villages.

The event runs from 11am to 5pm.

With 16 beautiful gardens to explore, you’ll find inspiration at every turn, along with the chance to chat to passionate garden owners and enjoy the friendly village atmosphere.

There is also a packed live music line-up, including the uplifting Dishforth Military Wives Choir in the church, the vibrant Yorkshire Voices, and the laid-back Jon Taylor Jazz Trio performing in the tranquil Vicarage Gardens.

Plant lovers can pick up a bargain at the plant stall and get expert tips from National Trust Head Gardener, Sam Shipman, who’ll be on hand for garden and plant advice.

Families will love the garden gnome hunt, while foodies can tuck into delicious homemade sandwiches, quiche, pastries, salads and cakes, served with hot or cold drinks in the village hall and school cafés.

Elsewhere, admire a gleaming classic car display, try your luck with the raffle, and new for 2025, discover the Art Show, showcasing work by talented local artists.

Tickets are £7.50 on the gate. Under 16s free. Cash and card payments accepted.

Fladam Theatre presents Green Fingers at Helmsley Arts Centre.

Packed full of catchy songs, puppetry and laughs, Green Fingers has been billed as a musical for all of the family.

Monday 2 June and Saturday 21 June

Guided tours of Selby Abbey are available to the public.

The tours, which last about 75 minutes, are free but donations are invited. Booking is not required.

The tours explore the history of the first monastery to be established in the North of England after the arrival of William the Conqueror in 1066.

Friday 6 June

Lydia De La Murrãy brings Closure? to Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre.

Closure? is a one-act comedy performance following Lydia on her journey of self-discovery through analysing all her past relationships.

Friday 6 to Sunday 8 June

Scarborough's book festival, Books by the Beach, showcases bestselling novelists and award-winning authors from around the UK.

All are appearing in-person and will be signing books at the event.

The festival is being headlined by broadcasters Jeremy Vine and Stuart Maconie as well as Gavin and Stacey star Larry Lamb.

Novelists Tracy Chevalier, Joanne Harris and Alison Weir will also appear along with true-crime writer Kate Summerscale, former MP Alan Johnson and geo-politics expert Tim Marshall.

The Whitby 60s Weekend takes place at Whitby Pavilion over three days with five shows.

Afternoons are priced at £18, while evenings cost £35 or you can purchase all five shows for £110.

Saturday 7 June

Northallerton Male Voice Choir performs its summer concert at Northallerton Forum.

The choir’s members will be singing a varied selection of music, and the show starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £12.

Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June

Filey Food Festival features more than 80 stalls showcasing the very best of Yorkshire’s food and drink as well as fantastic produce from outside the region.

Taking place within the Evron Centre and Crescent Gardens, the event offers stunning views across Filey Bay.

Tractorfest takes places at Newby Hall and is the UK’s largest vintage tractor and engine show.

Each year the show attracts more than 1,600 exhibits as well as in excess of 12,000 visitors.

Tractor Fest is organised by the Yorkshire Vintage Association, alongside Newby Hall and gardens.

Tickets are £18 for adults in advance or £20 on the door, and £15 for children in advance or £15 on the door.

Filey Food Festival takes place on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June within the Evron Centre and Crescent Gardens

Wednesday 11 June

Award-winning broadcaster and comedian Robin Ince will be appearing at the Milton Rooms in Malton.

In his book, Normally Weird and Weirdly Normal, Robin uses his own experiences to explore the neurodivergent experience and to ask what the point of “being normal” really is.

Tickets are £10 or a package of a book and a ticket is priced at £26.

Crime writer Trevor Wood will visit Northallerton library to talk about his award-winning Man on the Street trilogy and his latest novel, The Silent Killer.

Newcastle-based Trevor is a former playwright who has also worked as a journalist and communications officer for a council. Before that, he served in the Royal Navy for 16 years.

The talk is supported by New Writing North’s Northern Bookshelf programme and Arts Council England.

The evening will begin at 7pm.

Tickets cost £3, and booking is essential as places are limited.

Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 June

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway annual Diesel Gala is a four-day event that promises to be a celebration of Britain’s diesel heritage, with a line-up that will appeal to rail enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Highlights include a visit by Class 55 Deltic No. 55009 Alycidon, appearing courtesy of The Deltic Preservation Society Ltd. This is one of the most celebrated diesel locomotives in British railway history.

In addition, Class 50 No. 50021 Rodney will be appearing courtesy of 50021 Owners Ltd. Constructed in 1968 by English Electric. Rodney was designed for the demanding gradients of the West Coast Main Line.

Thursday 12 to Saturday 21 June

The 10-day Northern Aldborough Festival features top talents from opera and classical music hosted in the picturesque Roman village of Aldborough, near Boroughbridge.

Now in its 29th year, the Northern Aldborough Festival has become a leading fixture on the classical music calendar.

Performers include the Fantasia Orchestra, conducted by Tom Fetherstonhaugh, Thande Gumede Trio and Jacqui Dankworth and her trio.

Friday 13 to Sunday 22 June

Scarborough Fringe, one of five festivals that form this year’s The Scarborough Fair, offers creativity of all kinds, in venues large and small across the town.

The festival includes comedy, music, dance, theatre, spoken word, workshops and family shows.

This year involves a partnership with the Milan and Catania Fringe festivals, as well as offering the inaugural Chris Mellor Award for Excellence in New Writing.

Journalists from The Telegraph will also be presenting a live recording of an award-winning podcast covering the war in Ukraine.

Saturday 14 June

The Great Knaresborough Bed Race is an annual charity event where teams race decorated beds through Knaresborough’s streets, parkland, and even swim across the River Nidd.

The gruelling contest takes place around a course of 2.4 miles, and this year's theme is "TV adverts".

Sunday 15 June

A Regency dance class is taking place at Malton Memorial Hall in preparation for the Malton Regency Charity Ball in October.

The event runs between 2pm and 4pm.

The North Yorkshire County Agricultural Show takes place at Otterington Hall in South Otterington.

Attractions include the Farlavale Gun Dogs demonstration, livestock judging, heavy horses, farrier demonstrations and alpacas.

There will also be craft and baking competitions, catering outlets, a children’s fun fair, vintage tractors and static displays, displays of classic cars, light horse competitions and carriage-driving.

Sunday 22 June

Bedale Community Festival takes place between 10am and 3pm at Bedale Hall, DL8 1AA.

A fun family day out, activities include an inflatable obstacle course and bouncy castle with fairground rides. Food and drink stalls are available in Bedale Hall and on the park. There are also craft stalls, a dog show and a 1970s-themed fancy dress competition.

The Bedale Band will be playing along with the Leeming Ladies Military Choir.

Friday 27 June

A morning of forest bathing takes place at Thirsk Hall, Kirkgate, Y07 1PL.

Forest bathing is about connecting with nature and tapping into the senses through simple nature-based activities in a mindful way.

Tandy Taylor, a forest bathing practitioner, will lead people on a relaxed journey through the garden. Focus will be on the birdsong, the scent of herbs and looking at the small details in nature that are often overlooked.

The event runs from 11am to 1pm and costs £20.

Saturday 28 June

Scarborough hosts the town’s Armed Forces Day, one of the largest events of its kind in the country, in South Bay.

Taking to the skies will be the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 and the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Spitfire, Hurricane and Dakota.

The displays are part of a packed timetable that includes parades, land-based displays, musical performances and family activities.

Sunday 29 June

Harrogate Theatre Choir performs ‘HTC15: The Musicals 2’ at Masham Town Hall.

The show will feature songs from the world of musical theatre, with hits from famous West End shows and classic Hollywood films.

The event will take start at 4pm. There will be refreshments available.

The concert is supporting Mashamshire Community Office and tickets are priced £15 with admission for under-16s costing £8.

Catterick Heritage Armed Forces Day takes place at Gough Road in Catterick between 10am and 4pm.

The event is aiming to recognise the work of the Armed Forces and will bring together military personnel, families and veterans.

Malton Show is taking place at Scampston Park and is a fun day out for all the family.

Regular show events include livestock including cattle, sheep, goats and Alpacas, horse and pony classes, heavy horses and children’s rides and attractions.

Tickets are £14 for adults, £9 for senior citizens, £9 for 12 to 16-year-olds and under-11s will get free admission.
