Exhibition helps people see beyond the headlines
Iryna Oliinyk and Yana Drapak were among the guests at the launch of a powerful new exhibition exploring the impact of the war in Ukraine. Both women, who now work for us, came to the UK through the Homes for Ukraine scheme and spoke about their experiences of starting over in North Yorkshire and the lives they had to leave behind.
The new exhibition, which is featured in the video, was the idea of Roman Pronyszyn, a Ukrainian community co-ordinator in North Yorkshire. Inspired by a similar project which he saw at the University of York, Roman set out to create something that would help people across the county understand the war - not just through headlines, but the human stories behind it.
Developed in partnership with us, Helping Hearts North Yorkshire and the Richmondshire Refugee Support Group, the exhibition features six powerful panels combining photography and personal insight.
These explore life in Ukraine, before the war, the destruction caused by conflict and the resilience of those who have settled in the UK.
The exhibition launched at Northallerton Library and it will now tour libraries across North Yorkshire.
