Find out why Sarah is urging others to ‘go for it’
Sarah Knowles once believed she would never pass a maths qualification.
But she has now been recognised for her outstanding commitment to learning after overcoming her struggles with maths.
The 49-year-old from Thirsk was diagnosed later in life with dyscalculia – a condition that affects the ability to understand numbers – having experienced difficulties learning maths in school despite excelling at other subjects.
After returning to the classroom through our adult learning service, she achieved her qualification and is now pursuing a Level 3 Award in Training and Education so she can teach and raise awareness about dyscalculia.
She also went on to become a numeracy champion through the National Numeracy charity and secured a role as a volunteer.
Sarah is now encouraging others to do the same and said: “If anybody is unsure about going back into learning don’t be.”
She was amongst this year’s award winners who were celebrated at our Adult Learning Awards, which recognises achievement and progress across a wide range of courses.
