Marking hundreds of years of unforgettable journeys

Residents and visitors are being invited to be part of local history as Scarborough’s Spa Cliff Lift reaches a remarkable milestone, celebrated with a weekend of free events.

In partnership with Scarborough Spa, we are proud to support a packed programme of family activities, performances and local heritage to mark 150 years of the UK’s first and oldest funicular railway.

Completed in 1875 having cost in the region of £8,000, the lift was a Victorian engineering marvel that once ran on water and steam. It went on to inspire the creation of several other cliff lifts in the town and has carried millions of passengers over the decades.
