Information on the planning policy in the Scarborough area.
The local plan covers strategic policy, land allocations and more detailed development management policies and will guide and coordinate development in Scarborough, Whitby, Filey and the borough's rural areas. Work on the Scarborough local plan has now been halted and will be part of the new North Yorkshire local plan.
We prepare an authority monitoring report detailing progress with plan preparation and the extent to which the policies within the local plan are being achieved.
We produce supplementary planning documents (SPDs) on specific issues and policies. Supplementary planning documents are not statutory documents but are used to supplement the policies and allocations within the local plan. SPDs may take the form of design guides, area appraisals / development briefs or issue based documents.
An area action plan (AAP) is a type of development plan document focused upon a specific location or an area subject to conservation or significant change (for example major regeneration).
These development briefs provide guidance as to the type and form of development which may be accepted on specific sites within the borough in the context of existing planning policies including our local plan and national planning advice.
The Local Authorities across York, North Yorkshire, East Riding and Hull (YNYERH) have recognised the need to develop a broad framework that sets out an agreed view as to how sustainable growth could be facilitated across the sub-region over the medium to longer term, for instance, towards 2050 and beyond the current suite of Local Plans.
About 90% of planning applications are decided by the professional planning staff. These decisions are reported for information only to the planning and development committee.
As an area that has a long established tradition as a visitor destination, the use of properties to provide holiday accommodation is commonplace across the Borough, albeit with key areas of concentration in parts of certain towns and villages.
